30 PM. The programme was held on the special occasion of welcoming Com. Natalie Swann, Director of Women’s Transport Workers and Gender Equality, ITF, and Com. Dr. Asif, Global Coordinator of the Mental Well-being Project, ITF.
The programme began with the General Secretary felicitating the chief guest, Com. Natalie Swann, by presenting her with a shawl and an umbrella as a token of remembrance, a gesture that was warmly appreciated. The General Secretary then delivered a brief introduction outlining the history and functioning of NRMU, his vision for the trade union movement, and the significant role played by women within the organisation.
The programme was hosted by Com. Harsha Shelke, Assistant General Secretary, who highlighted the history of NRMU, the structure and functioning of its Women’s Committee, and the progressive initiatives undertaken under the leadership of Com. Venu P. Nair to ensure women’s active participation in trade union activities.
Com. Seema Pillai, Divisional Vice President, and Com. Manasi Joshi, Working President, shared their experiences and journeys in empowering women workers over the years. They spoke about their learnings and emphasised how the General Secretary and his team have consistently created a safe, inclusive, and equal space for women at all levels of the union.
Addressing the gathering, Com. Natalie Swann (ITF) praised the strong presence of women comrades and shared that their stories were deeply relatable to her own journey from a woman worker to a trade union leader. She expressed solidarity with the women comrades and encouraged them to openly share their views and expectations for a better present and future for women in the transport sector. She also thanked the male comrades for their equal contribution in making the programme a success.
Com. Dr. Asif (ITF) spoke about his long association with the General Secretary and the NRMU team. He appreciated the enthusiasm and energy shown in organising such a meaningful programme at very short notice and congratulated NRMU for the excellent arrangements.
Com. Vivek Nair, Assistant General Secretary, raised important issues concerning women workers in the informal sector and highlighted the role of RTMU in addressing these challenges. He explained RTMU’s direct affiliation with ITF and emphasised how collective efforts can bring progressive change by balancing the needs of both formal and informal sector workers.
The General Secretary agreed with these observations and expressed his concern for women workers in the informal sector, stressing that they require special attention at all levels.
The programme concluded with Com. Kiran Kajanai delivering the vote of thanks.
The event was graced by the presence of NRMU women comrades, Headquarters and Divisional office bearers, reflecting NRMU’s continued commitment to women’s leadership, equality, and empowerment.
